Satellity for iPhone and iPad, with its widgets, and this website
Privacy Policy
In Short
- Satellity doesn’t collect personal data. Satellite passes, the sky, and positions are calculated on your device.
- Your location stays on your device. It only leaves it, rounded to about 100 meters, when your device asks Apple Weather for the cloud forecast.
- No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking.
- Purchases are charged and managed by Apple: we never see your name, your account, or your card.
- We only receive data about you if you email us, and we only use it to reply.
- This website uses no cookies, no analytics, and no third-party fonts or scripts.
Who Is Responsible
Satellity is developed and published by Josue Echandia, an independent developer (“we” in this policy). For any privacy question, email josue@echandia.app.
What the App Keeps on Your Device
- Your location. Satellity asks for it only while you use the app, to work out which satellites cross your sky and when. It keeps your last location on the device, rounded to about 100 meters, so it doesn’t have to wait for GPS every time and can keep your alerts up to date in the background. It is never sent to our servers.
- The camera and motion sensors. The guide, the sky chart’s Follow My Phone, and the sky camera use them live to know where you’re pointing. No image or sensor reading is saved or sent.
- Your settings, alerts, and favorites, and your answers to “Did you see it?”, together with the details of the pass they refer to (its brightness, height, and the cloud forecast at the time). They stay on the device. Your answers only leave it if you choose to share them, from You › What You’ve Seen › Share Answers, through the iOS share sheet.
- Alerts are local notifications that your device schedules by itself. They don’t go through any server.
- Widgets, Siri, and the Lock Screen countdown. The app leaves a short list of your upcoming passes in a space it shares with its widgets on the same device (an App Group), so the widgets and Siri can show them, and hands the Lock Screen countdown (a Live Activity) to iOS on the device. None of it leaves the device.
- Backups. Like any app’s data, this data may be included in your device backup (in iCloud or on your computer) if you have backups turned on. Apple manages that backup according to your settings, and we have no access to it.
The Apple Services the App Uses
These services are provided by Apple, which handles data under its own privacy policy:
- Apple Weather (WeatherKit): for the cloud forecast, your device sends Apple your location, rounded to about 100 meters. Apple uses it to answer.
- Apple Maps (MapKit): the maps in the app. They start with the whole world, never center on you on their own, and can’t zoom in closer than about 1,000 km (620 mi), so Apple isn’t asked for the map of your neighborhood. Open in Maps opens Apple Maps at a launch pad or at the point of a transit’s center line, never at your location, and only when you tap it.
- iCloud: your favorite satellites are copied to your iCloud account so you have them on your other devices. That copy is yours, and we can’t see it.
- App Store: Satellity Pro purchases are made with your Apple Account. See Purchases below.
- Siri, Shortcuts, and Spotlight: you can ask Siri when a satellite passes, and find satellites from your device’s search. The app answers on the device; what you say to Siri is handled by Apple. The search index holds satellite names, including your favorites and the satellites you follow, and lives on your device.
- Calendar: Add to Calendar opens the system’s event editor, already filled in; you choose whether to save it. The app never reads your calendar and doesn’t ask for permission to. Events never include your location.
- Translate: Translate, on a launch’s mission text, uses Apple’s translation on the device.
If you chose to share analytics with app developers on your device (Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may give us crash reports and aggregated usage statistics that don’t identify you. This is an Apple feature, and you can turn it off there.
What the App Downloads
The app downloads public files (satellite orbits, reentries, launches, crews, and their photos) from a static file storage service we use (Supabase). These downloads don’t include your location or anything that identifies you. Like any web server, the provider receives your IP address and the technical details of the request in order to deliver the file; we don’t use them for anything else or combine them with other data. Crew and launch photos are copied to that same storage, so viewing them doesn’t contact other websites. The full satellite catalog is downloaded only if you ask for it, and its automatic updates never use cellular data or Low Data Mode.
Links to live video (YouTube, NASA+), to a photo’s license, or to other websites open outside the app, where each site’s own privacy policy applies.
Purchases (Satellity Pro)
Satellity Pro is offered as a yearly auto-renewable subscription or as a one-time purchase. All purchases are made with your Apple Account through the App Store, which charges, invoices, and handles refunds. We don’t receive your name, email, Apple Account, or payment details. To know whether you have Pro, the app asks StoreKit, Apple’s purchase system, on your own device; we don’t keep any record of it, and there is no account or server of ours involved. Apple gives us aggregated sales reports that don’t say who you are. Family Sharing sends nothing to us either.
Subscriptions are managed and canceled in your Apple Account settings (Subscriptions), or in the app under You › Satellity Pro › Manage Subscription.
What We Don’t Do
- We don’t ask you to create an account.
- There’s no advertising, analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking code from third parties in the app, and it doesn’t follow you across other companies’ apps or websites. That’s why it never asks for permission to track you.
- We don’t sell or share data with anyone, because we don’t have any.
If You Email Us
If you write to us, we receive your email address, the name on your email account, what you write, and anything you attach.
- Why: only to reply to you and to fix or improve the app. We never use it for marketing, never subscribe you to anything, and never sell or share it.
- Where: in our email provider’s mailbox, so it’s stored by that provider, possibly on servers outside your country.
- How long: as long as needed to handle your request; then we delete it. You can ask us to delete it sooner at any time.
- Legal basis (GDPR): our legitimate interest in replying to people who write to us and in improving the app (Art. 6(1)(f)) and, if your question is about a purchase, providing the service you paid for (Art. 6(1)(b)). We don’t need sensitive data; please don’t send it.
This Website
This website is a set of static pages hosted on GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, and has no analytics, advertising, or tracking. Its fonts, images, and videos are served from the site itself: it loads nothing from other companies’ servers. GitHub may log the IP address of visitors for security purposes, as described in its privacy statement. Links to the App Store and to the data sources open those sites, where their own policies apply.
How to Delete Your Data
- Your location: turn off Satellity’s access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services. The last location the app saved is deleted when you delete the app.
- Favorites: tap the star again on the satellite’s page; the copy in iCloud is updated too.
- Everything at once: delete the app (touch and hold its icon, then Remove App) on every device where you use it. This also removes the widgets’ data, the scheduled alerts, and what it added to Spotlight.
- Your purchases aren’t lost: they belong to your Apple Account. If you install the app again, Pro comes back; if it doesn’t, use Restore Purchases.
Your Rights
Because the app sends us nothing, we don’t have the data it stores: you control it on your device, as explained above. The only data about you we may have is in the emails you send us. You can exercise your rights over it, free of charge, by writing to josue@echandia.app from the address you used (or telling us which one it was).
European Union and the UK (GDPR)
You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, portability, and objection. We make no automated decisions about you. We reply within one month. If you think we didn’t handle your request properly, you can lodge a complaint with the Spanish Data Protection Agency (aepd.es) or with the data protection authority of your country.
Mexico (LFPDPPP)
Under the Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties, you have the rights of access, rectification, cancellation, and objection (ARCO rights), and you can revoke your consent or limit the use of your data. Email us your request with your name, the right you want to exercise and, if needed, what you want corrected. We’ll tell you our decision within 20 days at most and, where applicable, carry it out within the following 15 days. We process that data (your email, your name, and what you tell us; nothing sensitive) only to handle your request: there are no secondary purposes. We don’t transfer it to third parties; it’s only stored by our email provider. By writing to us you consent to that use. The competent authority is the Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno.
United States and Other Countries
We don’t sell or share personal information, and we don’t use it for targeted advertising. Wherever you live, write to us anyway: we’ll honor the rights your law gives you.
Children
Satellity collects no data from anyone, children included. If you’re a minor and want to email us, please do so with help from a parent or guardian.
Changes to This Policy
If what the app or this website does with data changes, we’ll update this page and its date before releasing the version that changes it. If the app were ever to collect data, we would say so here and in the app before it happens.
